Aaron Rodgers completed 22 of 30 passes for 244 yards and four touchdowns in his Pittsburgh Steelers debut, and Chris Boswell kicked a career-long 60-yard field goal with 1:03 remaining as Pittsburgh defeated the New York Jets 34-32 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey on September 7, 2025.
Justin Fields, starting for New York after spending the 2024 season in Pittsburgh, threw for 218 yards and one score while rushing 12 times for 48 yards and two additional touchdowns. Breece Hall carried 19 times for 107 yards as the Jets held a 26-17 lead through three quarters. A Xavier Gipson fumble on a fourth-quarter kickoff, recovered by Ben Skowronek at the New York 22-yard line, gave Pittsburgh the ball and produced two quick scores. Boswell’s 60-yarder closed it.

Boswell’s 60-yard game-winner was the longest field goal of his career, surpassing his previous mark of 59 yards set in 2022 also against New York. Rodgers’ four-touchdown, zero-interception afternoon was his 28th such performance in NFL regular-season play, tying Tom Brady for the most in league history at the time of the game. The 41-year-old finished with 244 passing yards and a 136.7 passer rating while generating 173 yards after the catch on completions, second-most of any passer in Week 1 across the league.
The matchup carried an additional historical footnote: it was the first game in NFL history in which both starting quarterbacks had been their opponent’s Week 1 starter the prior season. Fields had opened the 2024 campaign for Pittsburgh before signing with New York in the offseason, while Rodgers had started Week 1 for the Jets in 2024 before being released and joining the Steelers. Both quarterbacks performed well enough to win on a different day. Only one fumble separated them.
