The Numbers Behind the Result

Washington won on efficiency. The Commanders averaged 7.1 yards per play to the Chargers’ 5.2, scored on every red zone trip, and forced two Los Angeles turnovers that ended scoring threats. Daniels finished without a turnover and a perfect-looking passer rating in his first game back from a knee injury, and Croskey-Merritt’s 111 yards and two touchdowns gave the offense a steady ground game when it needed one.

Los Angeles held the ball for more than 34 minutes and converted nine of 16 third downs, yet none of it reached the scoreboard after the opening quarter. Five sacks of Herbert, 10 penalties for 85 yards, and two turnovers inside Washington territory account for the gap between the volume the Chargers produced and the 10 points they finished with. Both teams left SoFi Stadium at 3-2, separated on the day by which one protected the football.
