Philadelphia Eagles vs Washington Commanders Match Player Stats (Jan 4, 2026)

Josh Johnson was 39 years old, Washington’s third-string quarterback only because both Jayden Daniels and Marcus Mariota were on the injured list, and he scored the winning touchdown with 2:32 remaining to give the Commanders a 24-17 win at Lincoln Financial Field. His 1-yard rush capped a nine-play, 77-yard drive, completing a fourth-quarter comeback from a 17-10 deficit.

Philadelphia rested Jalen Hurts, Saquon Barkley, A.J. Brown and Dallas Goedert. Tanner McKee started in place of Hurts, finishing 21 of 40 for 241 yards with one touchdown and one interception behind a line that surrendered three sacks. The Eagles were penalised nine times for 123 yards, failed all three fourth-down attempts, and held the ball for just 25:51 against Washington’s 34:09.

Detroit beat Chicago 19-16 the same afternoon. That result, alongside Washington’s win, dropped Philadelphia from the NFC’s second seed to the third, setting up a wild-card home game against San Francisco rather than the possibility of two home playoff rounds.

Kelee Ringo’s 32-yard defensive pass interference penalty on the opening play of Washington’s final drive, called with 8:37 left in the fourth quarter, moved the Commanders from their own 23 to the Philadelphia 45 and began the nine-play, 77-yard sequence that ended with Johnson’s winning rush.

Washington closed the year 5-12, with a top-10 selection secured in the 2026 NFL Draft. Johnson’s touchdown pass to Bates was his first since 2021, coming in the final week of a Commanders season that had opened with Jayden Daniels leading genuine Super Bowl expectations and closed with a 39-year-old third-string quarterback starting back-to-back games because everyone ahead of him on the depth chart was hurt.

Philadelphia finished 11-6 as NFC East champions and entered the postseason at home against San Francisco as the NFC’s third seed. The second seed slipped away when Washington’s backup quarterback outplayed Philadelphia’s backup quarterback at Lincoln Financial Field.
