Anthony’s BBQ Sauce recalled its Barbecue & Dip-It Sauce after inspectors discovered undeclared anchovy in the product, posing a serious risk to anyone with fish allergies.
Anthony’s pulled the 15-ounce bottles from two Oregon stores on November 22 after routine inspection found the allergen mislabeling. The US Food and Drug Administration published the food safety alert four days later, warning that people with fish allergies risk serious or life-threatening reactions. No illnesses have been reported.

Limited distribution
Between February and November last year, Anthony’s sold the sauce at just two stores: Taylor’s Sausage Country Store in Cave Junction and Long’s Meat Market in Eugene. Fish allergies affect roughly 1.3 million Americans and can trigger reactions from hives to anaphylaxis, according to Food Allergy Research & Education.
The bottles carry UPC code 6 89076 62272 1 but were not assigned lot codes. This means anyone who bought the sauce at those stores during that period should check the barcode carefully, as there’s no other way to identify affected bottles.
Anthony’s makes the sauce by hand in small batches on Oregon’s Wild Rivers Coast. The company markets it as having “Northwest old-time flavor” for fish, pork, and chicken. The label features a cowboy illustration and describes the sauce as smoky-sweet.
The ingredient list includes tomatoes, brown sugar, water, vinegar, onion, champagne, and seasonings. Anchovy does not appear anywhere on the label, despite being present in the product. Fish must be declared on packaged food labels under federal law.
Company statement
In the FDA notice, Anthony’s said the recall began “after it was discovered during the inspection that the product containing Anchovy (fish) was distributed in packaging that did not reveal the presence of anchovy.”
Anthony’s has stopped distributing the sauce and is working with the FDA and Oregon Department of Agriculture on the food safety matter, according to Source86. The company did not respond to requests for additional comment about how the mislabeling occurred or how many bottles were affected.
If you bought the sauce
Anyone with a fish or anchovy allergy who purchased this product should not eat it. The sauce can be returned to the store for a full refund. For questions, contact Anthony’s at 541-661-4508 between 10am and 4pm Pacific Time, Monday to Friday.
Anyone experiencing allergic symptoms after consuming the sauce should seek medical attention immediately. Severe reactions including difficulty breathing or throat swelling require emergency treatment. Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room.
What remains unclear
The FDA and Oregon Department of Agriculture are overseeing the recall. Whether the sauce reached other retailers beyond those two stores or was sold online has not been confirmed. The company makes the product in small batches, which typically means limited production runs, but Anthony’s has not disclosed how many bottles were produced or sold during the affected period.
No other products have been named in the recall.
