M6 Walsall Birmingham Lanes Closure: 90-Min Delays (Nov 19)

A multi-vehicle collision on the M6 near Walsall closed three lanes and triggered delays exceeding 90 minutes on Wednesday, November 19, 2025. The northbound carriageway between Junction 8 and Junction 9 at Wednesbury became heavily congested after emergency services responded to the incident at 6.24am.

Five Vehicles Involved in Junction 8 Collision

West Midlands Ambulance Service confirmed three cars, a lorry, and a van collided on the motorway. Two ambulances and a paramedic officer attended the scene, treating two men for injuries. Both men were taken to Walsall Manor Hospital with injuries not believed to be serious.

Authorities haven’t released details about what caused the collision. National Highways West Midlands stopped all traffic at 6.25am before releasing vehicles through lane 1 only at 6.49am. Lanes 2, 3, and 4 stayed shut for vehicle recovery and clean-up operations.

Major Birmingham Commuter Route Hit by Congestion

The closure created approximately eight miles of congestion on the M6. Queues stretched back to Junction 5 near Castle Bromwich. This stretch is a vital route for commuters travelling from Birmingham to Walsall and Wolverhampton during peak hours.

Birmingham Live reported the M5 northbound also experienced severe disruption. Tailbacks reached seven miles to Junction 2 at Oldbury. Southbound traffic on the M6 faced additional delays near Junction 10A at the M54 interchange as onlookers slowed the flow.

Lanes Reopen After Two-Hour Closure

Recovery work finished around 9.08am. All lanes reopened. The agency advised motorists to expect continued delays while congestion gradually cleared across both motorways and suggested using the M6 Toll as an alternative route to bypass the affected area.

Conditions on the Walsall to Birmingham stretch returned to normal between 10.30am and 10.45am, according to updates from National Highways. Motorists can check live updates through the National Highways website.
