Washington Commanders vs New England Patriots Match Player Stats (Aug 8, 2025)

New England Patriots 48, Washington Commanders 18 | August 8, 2025 | Gillette Stadium, Foxborough, Massachusetts | Attendance: 64,628

The New England Patriots defeated the Washington Commanders 48-18 in the 2025 NFL Preseason Week 1 game on August 8 at Gillette Stadium. Rookie running back TreVeyon Henderson returned the opening kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown on the first play — and first NFL touch — of his career. Drake Maye added a 5-yard rushing touchdown in two series of work. Ben Wooldridge finished as the game’s most efficient passer, going 9-for-12 for 132 yards and a score. Washington rested 30 players, including starting quarterback Jayden Daniels.

The first time TreVeyon Henderson touched an NFL football, he returned it 100 yards for a touchdown. Twelve seconds into the opening quarter at Gillette Stadium, the rookie found a gap in Washington’s kickoff coverage unit and was gone — untouched, as he later put it, until he saw the crease open up. The Patriots led 7-0 before most of the 64,628 in attendance had settled into their seats and never looked back, running out 48-18 winners over the Washington Commanders in the 2025 preseason opener.

Washington rested 30 players — Jayden Daniels, Von Miller, Bobby Wagner, Deebo Samuel, and Marcus Mariota among them — a caveat that belongs beside the final score. It cannot fully account for 13 penalties and 98 penalty yards, nor the 187 yards New England’s returners posted on three kickoffs. Dan Quinn said as much afterward. “It stung for us tonight,” he said of the special teams performance. “That’s one of the phases that we really emphasize.” The game also served as the backdrop for the unveiling of Tom Brady’s 12-foot bronze statue outside Gillette Stadium before kickoff.

Washington’s 30 absentees explain the margin on paper. They do not explain 13 penalties for 98 yards, or the 187 return yards New England posted on three kickoffs — two of which went directly for points. The Commanders managed 338 total yards, more than the Patriots’ 327, but turned the ball over twice, converted just over a third of their third downs, and were penalised six times as often as their hosts. For Mike Vrabel, who was running his first game as Patriots head coach, the final stat line gave New England more to build on than to apologise for — 48 points, a 5-of-6 red zone conversion rate, and a rookie running back who made the kind of first impression that tends to stick.
