Upper Crust Bakery Bread in Multiple States Recalled Due to Possible Glass Fragments

Upper Crust Bakery recalled three frozen bread varieties in April 2025 after a production worker spotted glass fragments on seeded loaves. In January 2026, these products could still be in home freezers, since frozen bread can be stored for eight to twelve months.

Upper Crust Bakery Products Affected

Ancient Grains Hoagie Roll 4 oz packages, Lot #90, Code CP45 89 cases recalled

Multigrain Sourdough 18 oz loaves, Lot #90, Code CP12
699 cases recalled

Whole Grain Multigrain 20 oz loaves, Lot #92, Code CP12 30 cases recalled

All products were sold frozen in paper cartons. Distribution covered Pennsylvania, California, Connecticut, Maryland, Delaware, and Ohio, with the sourdough loaves making up the majority of affected cases.

When Products Were Sold and Recalled

The bread was sold between January and early April 2025. Upper Crust Bakery LP, operating as Crest Hill Bakery, initiated the recall on April 12, 2025. The FDA closed the recall in July after verifying retail distribution stopped, but products already in home freezers remained. With 2025 seeing 415 FDA recalls affecting 109.74 million units, up from 363 recalls in 2024, checking stored products has become more important.

Glass Contamination Traced to Seed Supplier

Investigation at the Glenn Dale, Maryland facility traced the contamination to sunflower seeds in Lot #PO1544 supplied by JJ Nuts of Fairfield, New Jersey, manufactured by Magic Flame.

JJ Nuts issued their own recall on April 13, 2025, for 560 bags of contaminated kernels. Upper Crust Bakery stated they stopped using Magic Flame ingredients and destroyed all affected inventory. This was the company’s first recall since 1997.

Health Risks From Glass Fragments

Sharp objects can injure the digestive tract, according to Mayo Clinic. Glass can cut the mouth while chewing, lacerate the throat during swallowing, or puncture intestinal walls, Poison Control notes.

The FDA classified this as Class II, a mid-level concern in their three-tier system. This means temporary health problems are possible but serious long-term effects are unlikely. Small, dull fragments may pass without incident, while sharp or larger pieces can cause injuries.

Seek emergency care if you experience chest pain, abdominal pain, blood in stool, unexplained fever, or coughing up blood after consuming these products. Contact your doctor with questions about potential exposure. No injuries were reported during the recall period.

Check Your Freezer for These Identifiers

Lot #90: Ancient Grains Hoagie Roll and Multigrain Sourdough
Lot #92: Whole Grain Multigrain
Packaging codes: CP45 or CP12

Discard the hoagie rolls, sourdough loaves, or whole grain bread with these lot numbers in a secure bin or return them to the retailer for a full refund. Do not remove the seeded crust and eat the rest, as contamination can transfer during packaging and handling.

Contact Upper Crust Bakery at 301-937-3450 with questions. The company is located at 7100 Holladay-Tyler Road, Suite 200, Glenn Dale, Maryland.

If you purchased frozen bread from Upper Crust Bakery in early 2025, check your freezer today for Lot #90 or Lot #92 with packaging codes CP45 or CP12.
